They started with with bodies like the Board of Education and local school boards, building up a deep bench of people who had run for and won public office.

The main point of the almost "under the radar" takeover was in the judiciary branch. The GOP had won many judicial offices long before they started winning statewides like the governorship, the lite-guvship, AG, etc. By getting the judiciary, they were able to shove through some of the most reactionary public policies in the nation, secure in the knowledge that they's all stand up to judicial scrutiny.

I bring this up because y'all seem to be sort of going through the same thing up there in Wisconsin, at least going by what I read on the blogs. I'd recommend devoting a lot more resources to keeping sane voices in the judiciary.

I testified at a textbook hearing several years back on behalf of the Texas Freedom Network. I can regale you with tales of comments like, "Oh come on now, slavery wasn't really all that bad," and "We don't need to be tolerant of other people's views." It was an amazing experience.apcnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32673461.post-19947316460329867752009-07-18T23:43:46.315-05:002009-07-18T23:43:46.315-05:00Comeon Peterson. This hasnt been what "Safe Libraries" has been advocating, and using this as an example for the sort of argument he is presenting is no different than posting a link to the youtube video from Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church singing their new "God Hates the World" song and trying to use it as an example of effective christian evangelism.

There is a huge difference between supporting the rights for others to learn about the impact, both positive and negative, that major people in world history have had, and turning around and trying to teach a nine year old how to give a blow job.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
